Storage
Daffodils do not need to be stored in the refrigerator. Store in mesh bags or open flats in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep dry. Add daffodils can be grown in the garden as well as pots outside.
Planting outdoors
Plant bulbs in the garden November to December with 2" of soil above the shoulder of the bulb and 1" of sand beneath. Water well. Fertilize after blooming. Allow foliage to wither and die naturally. Do not over water during dormant season.
Forcing in water
Paperwhites and certain Tazetta daffodils are the only daffodils suitable to indoor forcing. Use any bowl or vase with high sides (4" - 14"). Stake the stems as they grow with bamboo and twine if needed. Place 1-2 Tbs. agricultural charcoal in the bottom of the bowl to keep the water fresh. Add 2" - 4" gravel or rocks. Place the bulbs on the rocks or gravel. Plant as many bulbs as you can to make a better show. Add more rocks or pebbles to keep the bulbs upright, leaving 1/3 of the bulb exposed. Add water to just below, but not touching the bulb. The roots will grow down to find the water. Keep the water at this level. Place the bulbs in a cool, low light area. When roots form and growth begins, move bowl to a sunny window. Once flowers appear, move to a cooler place to extend blooming time.
Many of the varieties below will naturalize in the Houston area.
